Cultivation:
Specie tulips are a very popular group because they have the advantage that they naturalise and will thus flower from year to year. Suitable for containers, rockeries and the front of borders. They will also benefit from using bulb starter or root grow when first planting. As these are often smaller specie bulbs you only need to cultivate the soil to a depth of 10cms before planting. However If the soil is heavy and not free draining add grit and or well rotted organic matter to help with the drainage.
Plant bulbs 5cms deep and 3-5cms apart. The seemingly delicate flowers of specie tulips are quite fantastic and very robust, working well in most gardens. Please remember however that they need to be fed to help them naturalise well. Feed with well rotted compost, bone meal or tomorite. They are best planted in a well drained area that catches the sun most of the day.
Protect early growth in the spring from slugs and snails and remove dead heads after flowering to get the best from them. Ideal foods are well rotted manures, tomato feed and bone meal.
Care tips:
These tulips work really well in containers or rockeries and look good when planted with other varieties such as dwarf narcissi, muscari or corydalis.
Specie tulips do benefit from using bulb starter when first planting.
