Cultivation Instructions:

Specie tulips are a very popular group and have the advantage that they will naturalise and thus flower from year to year. Suitable for containers, rockeries and the front of borders. They will also benefit from using bulb starter or root grow when first planting. As these are often smaller specie bulbs you only need to cultivate the soil to a depth of 10cms before planting. If the soil is heavy and not free draining add grit and or well rotted organic matter to help with the drainage.

Plant bulbs 5cms deep and 3-5cms apart. The seemingly delicate flowers of specie tulips are quite fantastic and very robust, working well in most gardens. Please remember however that they need to be fed to help them naturalise well. Feed with well rotted compost, bone meal or tomorite. They are best planted in a well drained area that catches the sun most of the day.

When planting these tulips ensure the soil is loosened to a depth of 10cm and is free draining. In the heavier soils add grit and rotted humus material to give extra drainage. Plant tulips with the pointed bit upwards, when planting in containers planting depth can be varied and distance apart reduced to 2cms if required.

Protect early growth in the spring from slugs and snails and remove dead heads after flowering to get the best from them.  Ideal foods are well rotted manures, tomato feed and bone meal.

Care tips:

These tulips work really well in containers or rockeries and look good when planted with other varieties such as dwarf narcissi, muscari or corydalis.

Specie tulips do benefit from using bulb starter when first planting.
