Tulip Big Smile lives up to its name and is a stunning deep yellow tulip which grows up to 65cm tall. The flowers of tulip Big Smile will work well with many other garden plants.
Single late tulips are often used in cottage garden schemes as they stand out and have such a traditional tulip flower shape. Here in the Direct bulbs garden they look fantastic. These tulips are also well suited for growing in bedding schemes and for cut flower. Plant in soils that are free draining and in heavier soils such as clay, add grit or well rotted humus matter to help with drainage. In sandy soils add organic matter to help with fertility.
Cultivate soils to a depth of 20cms and plant tulips 15cms deep and 10cms apart. They look best when planted in groups of 10 or more. When planting in containers the planting depth can be reduced to 10cms and planting distance 5cms if required.
Protect early growth in the spring from slugs and snails and remove dead heads after flowering to get the best from them. Ideal foods are well rotted manures, tomato feed and bone meal.
Tulips offer such a range of colours and heights that they are ideal for any garden. The dwarf varieties are of course ideal in containers whilst the tall varieties work well in borders. The later flowering varieties are also ideal for planting with wallflowers and the early flowering varieties will work well when grown with Narcissus.
