Cultivation Instructions:

Parrot tulips are very showy because they have fascinating petals and bold colours that are all so often associated with parrots. Plant tulips in fertile free draining soils and in semi shade to full sun. Parrot tulips make very good cut-flowers as the blooms are long lasting in the vase. Tulips can be used in tubs, containers and garden borders. For the best effect plant in groups of 10 or more. When planting ensure the soil is cultivated to a depth of 20cms if possible. In heavier soils add grit and rotted humus material to give extra drainage. Plant the tulips with the pointed end upwards at a depth of 15cms and 10cms apart. It is traditional to plant tulips in October when the ground starts to cool down. If this is a concern do not worry if you plant them earlier or later as they will still grow well.

Care tips:

Tulips do benefit from using bulb starter when first planting.

Plant Multi-headed may flowering tulips with other late flowering varieties such as camassia and Alliums.

Remember to lift tulips at the end of the season. Only the big bulbs should be kept to flower for the following year. Tulips are often treated as annuals as flowering performance the following year is never as good.

Lifted bulbs should be kept in a cool dark place for the summer before re-planting in the Autumn period.
