Cultivation Instructions:

Sowing Indoors: April to May sow indoors using a light, free draining soil. Plant beans 2.5cm (1″) deep in individual pots of compost that are 5cms in diameter and deep enough for strong root growth (3″). Place in a warm position and keep soil moist but not to wet. A temperature of 15-20°C is ideal. The seedlings will normally appear 10-14 days later.

Keep seedlings well watered and plant outdoors when the fear of frosts has passed. Gradually get the plants used to outside conditions by putting them outside for increasingly longer intervals. Once hardy, plant them into the prepared area at 25cm (10″) intervals and allow 40cm (16″) between rows.

Sow/Plant outdoors:  Sow seeds outside from May to July, cultivate soils to a depth of 20cms and then use a rake to get a fine crumb at the surface, plant seeds 5cm (2″) deep, into the finely-prepared, fertile soil. Water after planting and keep plants well watered in the first week.

Do not plant if soils are waterlogged or cold wait until they have warmed up.  Plant seeds at 25cm (10″) intervals and allow 40cm (16″) between rows.

Care Tips:

Runner beans will grow up to 1.8m (6 foot) tall so will need support from canes or netting. In hot periods keep the flowers moist by misting them in the early evening with tepid water. This will encourage the pods to set.

Pick beans regularly to encourage further cropping.
