Description

Lion King Dutch Iris does resemble the colours of Simba in the movie the Lion King. The flowers are brown-purplish with falls that are veined a bronzy yellow. A really distinct variety that is a strong grower and well suited for growing in the garden or as cut flower.

Dutch Iris or Iris hollandica as they are also known,  naturalise and will flower for a number of years.

Cultivation Instructions

Cultivate the soil before planting to a depth of 20cms and dig in plenty of organic matter to provide food in the their first growing year. Plant the bulbs 10cm deep and 8cms apart in groups of 10 or more for the best effect. They prefer to be grown in full sun although they can be grown in semi shade.

Ensure soils are well drained and do not dry out in the summer. Iris also perform excellently when planted in containers.  Allow the foliage to die back after flowering, you can remove the leaves when they have turned yellow.

All Dutch Iris perform will best if left undisturbed for a number of years and they are ideal cut flowers in summer displays. There is such a wide range of colours in this group of Iris that you will always find the colour combination your are after.

Care tips:

Water bulbs after planting and apply a mulch of compost in November/December.

Feed regularly during the growing season with  bone meal or tomato food.
