Crown imperials as they are commonly known, are outstanding additions to the garden and will stand out in any planting scheme. The flowers of fritillaria imperialis Garland Star are really great and before they appear we are sure you will also enjoy the variegated foliage.

Cultivation Information

They will grow in semi shade and in most soils that are free draining. Leave to naturalise for many years and they will work really well when planting the taller alliums and eremurus.

Remember to feed during the growing season with bone meal to give the bulb energy for the following years flowers. Also remember with crown imperials to plant on their sides to prevent rotting. The bulbs of crown imperials have a dip in the centre so if water accumulates in them they can rot over the winter.

Keep well fed during the growing season and if possible mulch borders with well rotted manure or compost over the winter.
