Description

The flowers of Emily McKenzie are a deep orange with a throat coloured mahogany. Crocosmias prefer to be planted in well drained soil that is mulched over winter. Emily McKenzie will increase well in the garden if left undisturbed, once they have bulked up they will need to be lifted and split every 3-4 years. They are also good for using as cut flowers.

Cultivation Instructions

Indoor Planting: Grow crocosmia in containers indoors using a good indoor compost. However they are best grown outdoors.

Outdoor Planting: Plant Crocosmia from February on-wards in soils that are free draining and not waterlogged. Cultivate the soil to a depth of 15-20cms and plant corms 10cms deep and 8-10cms apart. In heavy soils add plenty of humus matter and or grit to help with drainage. They enjoy full sun, but will also perform well in the semi-shaded areas of the garden. Leave undisturbed to naturalise for a number of years in the garden and when you feel they are getting overcrowded, just dig them up when they are dormant and re-plant corms further apart.

Care tips:

Work well with companion plants such as Nerine and amarine.

Keep well fed with foods such as rotted manure, Tomato feed and bone meal. If possible mulch borders over the winter.
