Cultivation Instructions:

Sowing Indoors: For an early crop sow under glass from April to May. Plant seeds at a depth of 13mm (½”) in trays or modules containing free-draining seed compost. Cover the seed with a light layer of vermiculite or sieved compost.

Sow/Plant outdoors:  From May to August seeds can be planted direct into a well prepared seedbed. Sow at a depth of 13mm (½”) and distance of 30cm (12″) between rows. Prick out seedlings that have been sown under glass into trays and grow on in cooler conditions. Once the plants form 2-3 true leaves they can be transplanted to the growing site and spaced 30-35cm (12-14in) apart and 30-35cm (12-14in) between the rows.

Seeds sown outdoors should be thinned out once large enough to handle. Space plants as detailed above. Don’t waste the thinnings as these can be eaten as salad leaves.

Handy Tips:

Keep soil moist which will prevent seedlings bolting and does deter flea beetle. Apply lime to acid soils to reduce the acidity and lessen the risk of club root.

Sow with other seed salad crops for a variety of tastes.
