Cultivation instruction
Plant outside: September to early December. Cultivate soils to a depth of 20cms and plant bulbs 10-15cms deep (see below). It is best to plant bulbs in soils that are fertile and free draining. In heavy soils add grit and humus matter to help with drainage. In light soils well rotted compost will help retain water. Regularly feed during the growing season with foods such as well rotted manures, Tomato feed and bone meal or tomato food will provide food for continued flowering.
It is traditional to plant tulips in October when the ground starts to cool down. Tulips do benefit from using bulb starter when first planting and if you can loosen the soil to a depth of 20cms that would also be helpful to the root development. Plant tulip bulbs 15cms deep and 10cms apart in free draining soils. In the heavier soils add grit and rotted humus material to give extra drainage.
Care Tips:
The saxatillis, Minnow and Muscari will come back each year, the tulips do not always flower as well in their second year.
Ideal to grow with companion plants such as hyacinths and lavender.
Remember to feed the bulbs when they are growing with bone meal or similar
